When the chips are down, and everything within us screams that there is no God, who will we believe?

I think I agree with the general premise that worship (as in singing) can often become a rut, rather than a genuine expression of — and vehicle for — transformation.

Time may scab all wounds, but it doesn’t heal them.

I wonder if my challenge in this chapter is not so much friendship with God, but the very idea of friendship. In some ways, friendship is the most fragile of relationships, with the lowest barriers to exit.

Only surrender grounded in relationship — the knowledge that we are surrendering to God’s desire for us as ourselves — can save us from burnout and legalism.

God is only happy when I find my happiness (and purpose) in Him.

Bringing pleasure to God is called “worship.”

The genius of Rick’s approach is that the organizing principle is not merely “worship” (which, in practice, comes to mean “singing”), but the glory of God.
