TGR-S4E6: FBD-1 “Empowering Disciples”

Standard

This week on the Biastes we will be attempting a “FishBowl Dialogue” between Ernie P. and David J. This blog post is Ernie’s attempt to organize his thoughts in advance, based on his current best guess about David’s underlying Concern. Tune in next Tuesday 9/29/2020 to find out what actually happens!

What exactly are we talking about?

Question: What exactly is Ernie trying to accomplish with The Great Reset?

Perspective: Show the Body of Christ how to empower disciples of Jesus to keep growing closer to Him — rather than us.

Motivation

The modern (and historic) church is highly skilled at many great things: worship, teaching, community, missions, etc. But it is not very good at creating disciples of Jesus who transcend the limitations of their human leaders.

To be fair, that does still happen; but not at scale in any particularly systematic or efficient way. Worse, many of our institutions seem designed to prevent that from happening; due to understandable concerns that it would open the door to chaos or even heresy.

My dream is for us to learn (and model) how to co-construct just enough structure to accelerate our ability to keep growing closer to Jesus in love, likeness & living; without accidentally setting up myself (or anyone other than Jesus) as the standard we should emulate.

I don’t yet know how to do this, but that is my Quest. And I am eternally grateful for everyone who has been willing to come alongside me on this journey — without even knowing where we were going!

Verses

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God

Mark 10:25

And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your Father.

Matthew 23:9

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as fit for hell as you are!

Matthew 23:15
