When we are young we must learn
To watch out for fires that burn
And anger and shame play their part
In keeping us safe while we start
Yet there is a price that we pay
From being conditioned to obey
The walls that did once keep us safe
Eventually will start to chafe
And it is quite natural to rage
When woke to the bars of our cage
Obedience enforced by shame
Turns out to be just a rigged game
For there’s the corruption which hide
In systems that once gave us pride
And all my dysfunctions do stem
From compromises that protect Them
But as we grower wiser we see
How those Them really are Me
For somebody must play The Man
To keep us all part of one clan
The tradeoffs adulting requires
Keep stoking our rebellious fires
And sometimes I have to confess
There seems no fix for our hot mess
Yet this is the gospel made flesh
That somehow we can start afresh
When pride and shame come to die
As Jesus’ love rewrites my “I”
The false ego I did construct
Must now on His cross self-destruct
In His resurrection I see
A whole new way I can be me
There’s no words that can tell the tale
Of how life is lived past the veil
So joys of His love I must show
Through obedience 2.0
Today I will find
Obedience on this side of Love
