Dream: Gun Control

Standard

Owen Wilson and Ben Affleck are cops on a stakeout
This floor of the building
Is one giant room
Full of desks and bookshelves
Probably a college library

Ben is on administrative leave
Because he supposedly shot someone
For no good reason
Owen, his partner, is helping him prove his innocence
Ben’s fragmented memories
And other clues
Have led them here

This floor seems mostly deserted
I am the only other one there

Owen and Ben are facing outwards
Not talking or seeing each other
But still aware of each other’s presence

Suddenly I see Ben’s hand moving
Apparently of its own volition
Pulling his gun from his holster
Pointing it at Owen
And pulling the trigger
All without Ben looking at him

I hear a click
But no bang
Owen turns and smiles sadly
“I was afraid this might happen
That’s why I removed your bullets”

Ben turns toward Owen
He appears sincerely shocked and dismayed
But perhaps not entirely surprised

“I’m so sorry Owen
I didn’t mean for this to happen
I don’t want to kill you”
He backs up across the room
Towards me.

Owen nods grimly
He advances towards Ben
Holding his hands out
Non-threateningly

“I know, partner
This isn’t your fault
But you need help”

Ben nods
He appears close to tears
But when Owen comes close
Close enough to hug him
Ben’s hand lunges down
And grabs Owen’s gun

He does not try to shoot Owen
Instead he runs between two shelves
And points the gun at me
And fires

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.
