Continued from Toppling

I am… tunneling.

The trapdoor
Under the melted ice sculpture
Of Jesus bearing a cross
Led to an underground cave

Dimly
I see flickers of light
Echoes of sound
In the distance

I get on my hands and knees
To slowly
Painfully
Methodically
Clear rubble from my path
And the path
Of any who choose to follow

Until
I hit a wall

I look for Jesus.

I see nothing
But I hear a voice say:

“You must go lower”

I feel around
And discover a small gap
Under the wall

I strip down.

Til I can lay flat
Head sideways
And squeeze underneath

It is excruciatingly painful
But once
I force my brain through
I know the rest of me
Can follow

Once
I force my brain through

I close my eyes.

From the dust
And the pain
Until I drag myself
Past the barrier

Then I stand up
Shake the dust from my body
And open my eyes…

To indescribable wonder.
