Continued from Carving

I am… gathering.

All the sheep from across the sea
All my hunter-selves from across the forest

Have left their panic
And their pursuits
To come together

We look to Jesus.

As a Right Whale
He has swum upstream
On the channel we dug
And finally
With a might leap
Beached Himself
On a lonely hill

The sound
Of His landing
Stopped us in our tracks

The sound
Of His singing
Draws us to Him

It is not mournful
Or self-pitying

Rather
It is merry
Martial
A wedding march

Without realizing it
We all fall into step
Around His dying form
Until finally…

Jesus looks to me.

I break ranks
To draw near His face
(Though like sheep
Others follow me)

One giant tear
From His enormous eye
Falls on me

I am transfigured.

Still a sheep
But also a man
Clothed in white wool

Not quite a hunter
Not quite prey
But rather
A tracker

I climb on top of Jesus
Even as the other sheep
One after another
Following in a straight line
Are crowned by His tears

I am shining like the sun
I cry out
To my fragmented
Alienated
Desperate
Violent
Hunter selves:

“All has been made ready

Take and eat!”
