I am… a lion cub

Simba, to be precise
Living with Timon and Pumba
Eating stink bugs and mealworms
Because I have lost all my fathers
And fear it is my fault

I look for Jesus.

He comes like Rafiki the monkey
But not to berate me
Or make me look to myself
Or my ancestors

Instead
He goads me
Into chasing Him

Until I reach
The shadowlands
Where the Hyenas dwell
Beyond the place
My Father controls

And there

They kill Jesus.

I am confused
Alone
Terrified
Bereft
Lost

I cry out for my Father.

And He comes

But not the way I expect
