I am… suspended.

Hanging on the cross
Christ shares with me

Doing nothing
But abiding
While my flesh
Slowly dies

Anxiety
Boldness
Control
Detachment
Earnestness
Fathering
Guilt

Drop off me
Like worn-out armor
Until I am defenseless

I look for Jesus.

He is smiling
Through the agony
Of the cross
As He says:

“Those defenses
Were not
What prevented me
From saving you”

He points

I look down.

The discarded fragments
Of my ego
Are revealed to be
Poisonous stakes

I look up.

He chuckles
And says:

“The very things
You held onto so tightly
To protect yourself
Are precisely what I died…”

“To rescue you from!”
