  • Becoming Thankful
  • For the end of my self

Immanuel Approach Memo

Continued from Lie Down There

We are… holding each other close.

Not out of passion
But terror
As Jesus…

Drives like a madman!

He races the hay wagon
Across hills and valleys
Towns and fields
As if it were a chariot

The other couples
Jump off
Or fall apart
Until we are the only ones left

The wagon slows
We pull away from each other
Embarrassed

I look for Jesus.

He smiles knowingly
But somberly
As we roll to a stop
In an apple orchard
Near a farmhouse

My beloved gasps.

I see an older man
Large and prosperous
Coming out
Carrying a shotgun

Loaded
But not pointed at us
Yet

A younger man
Obviously his son
Lounges on the porch
Twirling a pair of revolvers

He does not look at us
Directly
But I can see the glint
Of recognition
In his eyes

Jesus speaks.

He says:

“Do you know
Why I brought you here?”

I start to say
I don’t know

But then I realize
He was not
Speaking to me

As my beloved weeps
And says:

“Because this
Is where I was raised
And they…”

“Are my family!”

To be continued

Reflection

I feel…

  • Jostled
  • Connected
  • Traumatized
  • Intruding
