Appendix: Theodicy

Theodicy is an attempt to justify the goodness and omnipotence of God in the face of the existence of evil and suffering.

The term was first used by the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in his 1710 work Théodicée, where he argued that the present world is the “best of all possible worlds.” In philosophy and theology, theodicy addresses what is often called the problem of evil, exploring how divine justice can be compatible with human experiences of pain, injustice, and loss.
