Concluding Rainbow Connection
This universe begins
The way ours ends
With a wedding
Father Time and Mother Nature
No gifts, please. This wedding is our gift to you.
Invite you to attend the wedding of their daughter
Princess Femininity (née ‘Nother Witch)
To Prince Masculinity (née Shylock/Contraption)
The wedding will take place
at the beginning of time
in the heart of reality.
Aftermath
The happy couple — and most of the guests — have left. Sweetums is finishing the cleanup. There is no sign of Ang.
Connection pulls off his clerical collar and slumps in a chair at the table with Time and Nature.
Time: Nicely done, my boy. Hard to believe it was your first time officiating.
Connection: It was my first time doing anything on “this side.”
Nature: Tut, tut. There are no sides. You played your role beautifully, just like everything else in Nature.
Time: [raising his eyebrows] We aren’t going to start that argument again, are we?
Nature: [fluttering her eyelids] If we don’t fight, how ever can we make up?
Connection: Hang on, isn’t this how the whole thing started?
Nature smiles at him wickedly. Connection actually blushes.
Connection: Not that! This whole dialogue about Love and War: Is conflict and violence as essential to life as harmony and nurture?
Time sighs and takes Nature’s hand.
Time: She was actually right the first time. Earnest’s problem is that he was trying to decide which was good and which was evil. It is an impossible question…
Nature: [sadly] Because the knowledge of good and evil is what ruined the state of nature.
Time: And you were the one who broke the curse.
Connection: What, me?
Nature: Yes. By speaking forgiveness to Shylock. Perfect acceptance of your opposite as the antidote to the knowledge of good and evil.
Connection: But doesn’t that mean Love and Nature win?
Time: [smirking] Yes. But only by making War over Time.
Connection: Huh?
Nature: [sighing] He’s right. Love had to confront the reality that not everything is natural, and fight through Time to bring everything back into balance.
Time: Even as War had to let go of Time to allow Nature to bring him victory.
Nature: And once all was restored, the distinction between War and Love didn’t matter. They became whole, Male and Female in the image of God, as it was in the beginning. Perfect communion. Unity rather than Duality.
Connection: [shaking his head] I think I need another drink.
He reaches for the bottle, but then notices Time glancing a question at Nature, who shakes her head.
Connection: Uh-oh. Please don’t tell you’re about to send me on another crazy quest.
Time: No, no, nothing like that.
Nature: [placing her hand on his] Well, it is a little like that.
Connection buried his face in his hands. Time claps a fatherly hand on his shoulder.
Time: Think of it more like… a vacation.
Nature: [primly] A working vacation.
Time: [correcting her] A family vacation. C’mon, you’re the avatar of Connection now. Isn’t it time you joined the family business?
Connection: What?
Nature takes his arm in hers, and lays the back of her hand against his cheek.
Nature: You’ve been alone for far too long. It’s time to meet the rest of your clan.
Connection: I’m part of a clan? What do we all do?
Time: Why, just what comes naturally!
They link arms, and step off… into eternity.
