Honor one another’s fears
So that you feel safe enough
To yield them to Christ

Identity Exchange Memo

Continued from Resident

I am… riding into town on a donkey.

Dressed in my high-priestly robes
At first
Everyone thinks
I am a celebrity

A crowd gathers
Takes photos
Selfies
Instagrams

I smile and wave
But deep inside…

I am terrified.

Knowing
The enemies I had been hiding from
THEY
Will find me

Then a miracle occurs.

Other figures
Who had hid their priestly robes
Under cloaks
Shed their disguises
And join me

More donkeys are brought

The crowd cheers.

Grows bigger
Stronger
Happier

I had forgotten
How desperately people
Need a priest
To take away
Their sin
Guilt
Shame

I had forgotten
How desperately people
Need a priest
To take away
Their sin
Guilt
Shame

It goes beautifully.

I can almost
Forget my fears

Until
I realize
The crowd is leading us…

To the place of slaughter!

To be continued

Reflection

I feel…

  • Honored
  • Needed
  • Grateful
  • Unalone
  • Joined
  • Famous
  • Foreboding
  • Sacrificial

Scripture

“So they dedicated three cities on the west side of the Jordan River: Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they dedicated Bezer in the desert plain belonging to the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh.
These were the designated cities of refuge. Any Israelite or any foreigner living among them who had accidentally killed someone could run to one of these cities for protection.
He could live there safely until he had a fair trial, and unless he had been proven guilty, he could not be killed by the one seeking revenge.”‭‭
