Continued from Purified

I am… full.

Eating the body and blood of Jesus
Slaked my thirst
Satiated my hunger
Restored my humanity

But the rabies virus
Still infects my brain
The life of Jesus
Cannot cross
The blood-brain barrier

At least not yet

I look for Jesus.

He… is whistling
A falconer’s whistle
All my redeemed hawk-selves
Begin to dance
Inside our hollow tree

I watch
Mesmerized
As they fly in and out
In intricate patterns

Jesus looks to me.

He says:

“Let your body
Renew your mind”

Slowly
Painfully
Embarrassingly

I begin to waltz
In a pale imitation
Of the dancing hawks

Decade
A version of my younger self
Lands to dance with me

He laughs

“Don’t feel bad
We all started out this way”

Slowly
I retrain my brain
To move like a hawk
To flow like a flock

Surely
Other hawks descend
Teaching me their ways

My brain
Is still infected
My thoughts
Still untrustworthy

But my soul
Is in harmony
With those around me

Which is enough
For now

So we dance!
