Continued from Happening

I am… enfolded.

Without my realizing it
The scarecrow has led me above the forest

I am standing on a relatively narrow branch
Hundreds of feet in the air
Cloistered by giant oak leaves

I can’t imagine how I got here
But I am pretty sure
I wouldn’t have made it
If I had looked at the path
Instead of my guide

I wouldn’t have made it

I look for Jesus.

He is still in the form
Of a giant hawk

He is holding court
Over smaller hawks
Wearing orange safety vests
Teaching them profound truths
That my human mind
Cannot grasp

With a start
I realize these birds
Are my other selves
Who have been redeemed

Still hunters
But with inhuman sight
Extraordinary speed
And the ability to fly

Their only limitation
Is they cannot kill from a distance
They must embrace their prey
With their own two claws
Fill their mouth
With its very life

Jesus looks to me.

He cries out
In bird-speech
But somehow I understand:

“Their limitation
Is not a weakness
But a great gift”

He calls forth a small raptor
Wearing glasses
Who reminds me
Of my ten-year-old self

He enfolds him
Beneath an enormous wing
And says:

“Because they close with their prey
They must eat its flesh
And drink it’s blood
While it is still living”

Jesus looks at me.

“As you must do mine!”
