Immanuel Approach Memo

I am riding a train

An old-fashioned steam train
Like in a Western

I am dressed as a gambler
Slick
Confident
Appearing rich
Though I’m actually poor

I look for Jesus.

He is outside the train
Riding a white horse

Like a train robber
But all dressed in white
And nothing covering his face

Instead of a cowboy hat
He wears a crown

Instead of a gun
He carries an iron rod

He isn’t angry
He is grinning

He’s not trying to stop the train
He wants me to jump off

This isn’t a robbery
It is a rescue

This isn’t a robbery
It is a rescue

My train is taking me to jail
Perhaps even hell

It is crazy to think about jumping off a moving train onto a relatively tiny horse

But isn’t staying on a doomed train even more foolish?

Reflection

I feel…

  • Cowardly
  • Fraudulent
  • Grateful
  • Almost desperate enough to jump

Scripture

“For you have broken the chains that have bound your people and lifted off the heavy bar across their shoulders, the rod the oppressor used against them.
You have shattered all their bondage, just as you did when Midian’s armies were defeated.”

Isaiah 9:4

One response to “1/26 IAM: Train-Braker”

  1. Dr. Ernie Avatar

Maybe I don’t need to jump.
Maybe I need to help Jesus brake the train
