Immanuel Approach Memo

I am… walking in a land of deep darkness

It is not their fault
They are just doing what their fathers taught them to do

Usually by example
Often by neglect

The darkness is getting worse
It is a tangible thing
Heavy
Like a blanket of “dark matter
Smothering the land

Making once-proud institutions crumble beneath its weight
Which I suppose is the point

I look for Jesus.

I see Him in the East
Rising lie the dawn

But nobody else does

At first
I think it is because they are looking West

But as it gets brighter
Surely they’d see the reflected glow
Or at least their own shadows

Then I notice
Many people are looking East
But facing the ground
Or staring at the heavens

Which is when I realize
The only way to see Jesus
Is to be consciously looking for Him
At our point of maximum pain

The only way to see Jesus
Is to be consciously looking for Him
At our point of maximum pain

Which we only dare do
Can do
When the darkness is overwhelming
Yet we choose to praise

Reflection

I feel…

  • Quiet
  • Humbled
  • Hungry
  • Hopeful

Scripture

“Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”‭‭

Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭NIV‬‬
