Dream: Brother Death

Published by

on

Two sisters and a brother
Big sister blames herself
For younger brother’s death

All three were playing in a tent
With uncharacteristic recklessness
Big was playing with a blowgun
Something happened
Younger brother died

Little sister
Won’t let her forget it

Only much later
Do we see the flashback

Little sister was jealous
She wanted to make Big sister look bad
So Litte triggered the accident

The guilt is eating her up inside
But the same jealousy
(the same shame?)
That provoked the incident
Keeps her from admitting
Who is truly at fault

That jealousy and shame
Is a vicious loop
It reinforces her image
As the screw-up sister

Because of how she acts out

I wonder…

What would happen
If Big Sister
Found out
What Little Sister
Had done

Little is convinced
Big would hate her
For forcing her to carry
Publicly
All the guilt and shame
For their brother’s death

But Big
Is bigger than that

When Big finds out
Her heart is full of compassion
For the private pain
Little has carried

Because Big really was reckless
And is big enough
And secure enough
To own the whole responsibility

If she hadn’t been foolish
Little’s childish jealousy
Would not have had
Deadly consequences

Big
Has forgiven herself
So she can forgive
Little

Because
She sees
Her own sin as Big

And others as Little

What would it take
For me
To become Big?

“For this reason I say to you,
her sins,
which are many,
have been forgiven,
for she loved much;
but he who is forgiven little,
loves little.”
